Spring Mowing Do’s and Don’ts (What Helps Your Lawn—and What Hurts It)

Mowing season is here in Topeka.
And while it might seem simple—just cut the grass—how you mow early in the season can have a big impact on how your lawn looks the rest of the year.
We see a lot of lawns struggle, not because of major issues, but because of a few common mowing mistakes.
The good news is they’re easy to fix once you know what to look for.
DO: MOW AT THE RIGHT HEIGHT
One of the biggest mistakes we see in the spring is cutting grass too short.
Shorter doesn’t mean better—it actually puts stress on the lawn.
Keeping your grass a little taller:
- Helps retain moisture
- Promotes deeper root growth
- Naturally helps crowd out weeds
For most lawns in this area, taller is better—especially early in the season.

DON’T: SCALP YOUR LAWN
Scalping happens when too much of the grass blade is removed at once.
This can:
- Shock the lawn
- Create brown or patchy areas
- Open the door for weeds
A good rule of thumb is to never remove more than about one-third of the blade at a time.

DO: MOW CONSISTENTLY
In the spring, grass grows fast.
Waiting too long between cuts often leads to:
- Uneven appearance
- Clumping
- Stress from cutting too much at once
A consistent mowing schedule keeps everything looking clean and healthy.

DON’T: MOW WHEN IT’S TOO WET
We get a lot of rain this time of year, and mowing wet grass causes more harm than most people realize.
It can:
- Tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly
- Leave ruts in the yard
- Create clumps that smother healthy grass
If the lawn is saturated, it’s usually better to wait.

Mowing might seem simple, but doing it the right way makes a big difference over time.
If your lawn isn’t looking the way you want this spring, small changes can go a long way—or it may be time for a more complete plan.
If you’d like help getting your lawn on track, we’d be happy to take a look.
